A pair of Loetz Art Nouveau Antique Bohemian Iridescent Cranberry Glass Vases
These iridescent cranberry glass vases with a ribbed, swirling design. This style of art glass, often attributed to the Art Nouveau period, can be found from makers like Kralik and Loetz. Cranberry glass is a type of ruby glass that gets its distinctive colour from gold chloride, a costly ingredient, which makes the glass a specialty item often produced in smaller batches.
Great condition, but please note very minor chipping on the top rim, please refer to all images.
Width 9 x Height 19 cm
The name Lötz actually comes from a man who had very little to do with glass himself — Johann Lötz. After he passed away in 1844, his wife Suzanna remarried Dr. Franz Gerstner, and in 1851 they bought the Klášterský Mlýn glassworks in southern Bohemia. The factory had originally been founded in 1836 by Johann Baptist Eisner von Eisenstein, but Suzanna renamed it Johann Lötz Witwe, meaning “the widow of Johann Lötz.” Over time, that was shortened to Lötz, and later anglicized to Loetz.
In 1879, Suzanna’s grandson Max Ritter von Spaun took over and brought in Eduard Prochaska as director. Together, they moved the focus from everyday glassware to stunning, high-end pieces. By 1895, inspired by Tiffany, Loetz was creating beautiful Art Nouveau glass with the signature iridescent finish it’s still famous for today. The Loetz glassworks continued until 1947.
