Art Deco Pressed Glass Pigeon Bowl in Lithyalin Style – Bohemian Origin, STS Abel
This Art Deco pressed glass bowl, blown into a mould, features two pigeons on its sides and is crafted from black and brown glass known as lithyalin, marmorite, or onyx glass. This distinctive glass type, characterized by its marbled and striped appearance resembling minerals or gemstones, was accidentally developed by Friedrich Egermann (1777–1864) in Bohemia. The term lithyalin comes from the Greek word lithos, meaning "stone." Several glass factories across Europe later produced this style of glass.
In the 1970s, this particular bowl design was reissued in clear pressed glass by United Glassworks’ STS Abel in Zagreb, using the original 1930s moulds.
