Fulgurite (derived from the Latin word fulgur, meaning lightning) is one of nature’s most dramatic phenomena. It forms instantly when a lightning bolt hotter than the surface of the sun strikes silica-rich desert sand. The raw electrical charge vaporises the centre while melting the surrounding sand into a vitrified, hollow glass tube—freezing a split-second atmospheric event into permanent earth matter.
